The Big Spirit Youth Theatre was founded in 1984 at the Queen Mother Theatre to offer actor training and performance opportunities to young people aged 14 to 18. Since then, Big Spirit (formerly known as the Bancroft Youth Theatre) has helped actors learn the skills of performance and many have gone on use their talents professionally.
Melvin Burgess famous book about runaways and drugs is brought to life in John Retallacks great play. Tar loves Gemma but Gemma wants to fly. Its a fantastic journey until she flies too close to the sun... Big Spirit Theatre Company are famous for their strong physical theatre style and each year they bring something new and noteworthy to the Fringe. ★★★★★ (Broadwaybaby.com); ★★★★ (ThreeWeeks).

Big Spirit Youth Theatre 22 Years Young! May 2006 sees the 22nd anniversary of the founding of The Big Spirit Youth Theatre at the QMT. In that time of course many 100s of youngsters have made the brave decision to come down and join the group (it always takes a lot of courage to come along that first time when you don’t know anyone). For the vast majority of newcomers, that first visit stretches into a stay of some 3 to 4 years (from 14 to 18 years as it says in the literature).
