Next season in Big Spirit

At Big Spirit we believe that while workshops are valuable, you really learn to act by performing in front of a paying audience as often as possible. This is why there are always plays in rehearsal and the season looks as busy as it does. So what does next year bring?

The Crucible
Perhaps Arthur Miller’s best known play which is  about witchcraft trials in the small New England town of Salem in the 1690s. In reality though, he was likening the proceedings of the House of Un-American Activities in the 1950s to a witch hunt – which of course they were. This is a brand new production for the post-Saw III generation so expect to be terrified!

She’s All That
The 1999 rom-com version of Shaw’s play Pygmalion is brought bang up-to-date in this new musical. When the school hunk, Zack, is dumped by the Prom Queen he has no one to take to the ball. For a bet he says he’ll take the next girl to walk into the room and its Laney Boggs, the brightest student on campus but totally unpopular. In helping her transform into the coolest girl in the school, Zack becomes smitten. Meanwhile Donald McKenzie finds his mission to become the next Prom Queen is full of problems too.

Romeo & Juliet

This is the outdoor theatre production for 2012. No need to reprise the story here but needless to say it will all be given the Big Spirit spin and look different to any R&J you’ve seen before.
Beautiful Thing
This is Jonathan Harvey’s urban fairytale about 15 year Jamie coming to terms with his sexuality in a Thameside estate. It’s charming and feel good but the issues about coming out are still very current and show how little has really changed in the last 15 years.

Spur of the Moment
Anya Reiss’ Royal Court wunderplay of 2011 has its first amateur performance here at the QMT.  Teenage Delilah loves High School Musical and ogling the family’s 21-year old lodger. It’s all just a dream until he starts to notice her...
